THESE ARE THE TIMES FOR THE SIGNS
By Randy Loudenslager
In the book of Ezekiel, among a number of places in the Bible, we find prophecy that foretells in chronological order some of the events that will transpire in the last days. 1) An exiled people have gathered back to their land. 2) The land will have recovered from war. 3) The people will live in peace and safety. 4) The land will be invaded by many nations and will be plundered. 5) The LORD will destroy the invaders and rule over the earth.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, while making a statement in support of Israeli military incursions, made a few comments that fit Ezekiel's prophecy as if to order. He said, "After 2000 years in exile, no one believed that we would make a comeback. When we started towards independence very few people believed we would achieve it. Now we are starting a voyage to peace, and we will achieve it as well."
Mr. Peres is not known for being a particularly religious man and is better known for his liberal perspective in the Israeli government. Therefore it can be reasonably assumed that he has no real spiritual understanding of the prophecies he has uttered. But what Peres said was indeed prophetic. Starting with Peres's first point we see his statement parallels the first parts of Ezekiel's vision. 1) Peres speaks of returning from exile (2,902,200 immigrants in 54 years). 2) He mentions Israel's independence which was birthed in war. 3) Peres shows the goal as peace. 4) But, Peres doesn't understand the consequences of taking the road to peace that they will follow. A road that he champions. Israel will give away part of her inheritance to achieve peace. When Israel despises her inheritance in this way God will take away the rest of it as punishment for her rebellion. 5) Jesus Christ will come to liberate Israel personally.
Shimon Peres is a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. He has brought honor to Israel via this prize and is respected throughout Israel regardless of his political views. Shimon Peres embodies the type of leader who will lead Israel into rebellion. Respected and well intentioned in bringing peace, but will follow the ways of man rather than seek refuge in the LORD.
