SHARON IGNORES THE PEOPLE
By Randy Loudenslager
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is ignoring the will of the people, endangering the nation and sending mixed signals to the Palestinians. This was the basic outline of Sharon's own Likud party indictment against him in a meeting held after Sharon about-faced his policies and agreed to negotiations with the Palestinians without waiting for the violence to end and freeing Arafat to move about the territories. Most bewildering to Sharon's Likud comrades was the lack of consultation with the party hierarchy who helped him into office.
What most angered Likud members was Sharon's apparent direction revealed in an exchange between Sharon and Public Security Minister Uzi Landau during the meeting. Sharon made the statement that the establishment of a Palestinian state was an incontestable fact. Landau jumped out of his seat and proclaimed: "There will never be a Palestinian state!" Landau reminded Sharon that the Likud party is adamantly opposed to the establishment of a Palestinian state in Israel.
Although still holding a 75 out of 120 seat majority in the Knesset, it is becoming clear that Sharon's gamble has alienated his support among the Likud membership. Shimon Peres, the outspoken foreign minister from the left leaning Labor party, is apparently enjoying increased self-confidence after the departure of two right-wing cabinet ministers. Taking advantage of Sharon's change of heart Peres has gone as far as telling the Europeans that Israel wants to achieve a cease-fire by the weekend, a clear indication that Sharon may be considering an end to the successful military incursions by the IDF into Palestinian cities and refugee camps.
Contradicting gross media bias, most recent polls show 60-75 percent of Israelis favor the removal of Palestinians from the occupied territories and a majority is against a Palestinian state. These figures have climbed dramatically from past figures with poll questions showing the climb attributed to the Palestinian terror activities. Sharon is not in step with his constituency and has abandoned the ideals of the party and people who believed in him.
The foregone conclusion of the American government and the world is summed up in another statement Sharon made at his Likud ministers meeting, "The moment Arafat declares a state, 166 countries throughout the world will recognize it." Sharon has given up on something the rest of the world and many in Israel don't believe in: God's covenant with Israel.
