CHIEF RABBI CALLS FOR PRAYER AND FASTING

By Randy Loudenslager

Israel's Chief Rabbi, Eliahu Bakshi-Doron, has called upon the Israeli public to observe next Wednesday as a day of prayer and fasting in consideration of the present state of conflict. Wednesday marks the first day of the Hebrew month Nissan and the day is usually observed in repentance and prayer.

Although resilient, Israelis are beginning to grow anxious as polls show confusion and a lack of faith in the leadership's ability to bring about security in Israel. The book of Ezekiel shows the future nation of Israel living securely within her borders and inhabiting unwalled cities. She will have finally made peace with her enemies and in a collective sigh will let her guard down as what having been fought for for so many years appears to be achieved. At this time Israel's enemies will overrun and plunder her and Jerusalem will fall. At the end of the desolation of Israel the Messiah Jesus will appear and will defend Jerusalem and the LORD's reign on earth will begin.

We, as Christians, need to heed Rabbi Bakshi-Doron's call to prayer and fasting. Ultimately we can not stop the things that will happen at their appointed times, but we can intercede for the Jews who are faithful and are not blinded to the catastrophe looming over the nation if they divide God's land with her enemies. Our prayers, as scripture shows, will guide them through the flames and when they emerge from the 'time of punishment' they will recognize their savior as the one with the pierced hands and feet.
