Water Alliances?
By Randy Loudenslager
I have often wondered how the king of the South, Egypt, will regain some of her former glory as an ancient super-power and take on the antichrist, as found in Bible prophecy. Recent developments may provide a clue. By reading Daniel and Ezekiel we can see that Egypt will head an alliance made up of Egypt, Libya, Sudan and probably other nations in the region with common historical ties. In her ancient past, Egypt would have held sway by simply marching her armies against any land that wouldn't submit to her. Egypt, at the present time, is unable to march armies on all her neighbors. So, how will Egypt begin to build her sway over other North African nations? I believe that the answer, at least in part, is water, and more particularly the Nile river. Egypt, through treaty, has control over much of the Nile and has thwarted attempts to develop these resources by nations where the Nile finds it's source. By instigating civil war and political instability in her neighboring states, Egypt has held some sway, but has not been able to dominate the region through coercion.
Things are beginning to change. Egypt
has changed her strategy from hording the Nile's waters to sharing
them with other nations. Although a wonderful gesture on Egypt's
behalf, her past shows her willingness to use this tool to make
other states dependent on her. Those that will benefit from Egypt's
generosity are Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania,
Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The catch, the European
Union and the U.S. are encouraging the break up of Africa into
trading blocks, both southern and northern, Egypt is seen as a
major player in the Northern African trading block. Egypt will
forge treaties with the African states concerning hydroelectric
power development, river regulation and resources management.
Egypt's technological leadership over its neighbors in the development
of water resources will put her in a powerful position of control
over North Africa and she will never have to march armies out
to accomplish her desires. In the end it will be God who has the
final word, Egypt will fall to the antichrist and her allies will
turn against her and will march on Israel. What will become of
the Nile? God will dry it up and it will stink with rot. How awesome
is our God!
