Wafa' Idrees, the first Palestinian woman suicide bomber, was honored in a funeral march by several thousand Palestinians. The coffin was empty, Israel still holds her mutilated remains until they are finished with their investigation.
The Palestinian leaders have seen the horrified reaction by the western media and have seized the opportunity with gusto. The Intifada appears to be squeezed to almost failure, so it is inevitable that a surprise card in this deadly game will be capitalized on swiftly to stave off defeat, it is an act of desperation. This is exactly what the Palestinian leadership is hoping the world sees, their desperation for survival even to the point of women blowing themselves up for the cause. Particularly in the west where people are emotionally responsive to horrific events, this episode in the 54 year old conflict in Israel may invoke sympathy from the masses and force leaders to soften their present hard-line positions against Arafat. This could buy Arafat desperately needed time and make subtle changes in the ever changing political arena that might favor Arafat or even create the circumstances that might precipitate a rescue of Arafat by sympathetic Arab states.
The open window of sympathy will not last long and it can be expected that the Palestinians will work quickly to exploit their new women heroes, but the world has been exposed to much bloodshed and its memory is short. They will react only for a short time until some new horror gathers their attention. This lack of caring goes both ways as history shows. The Bible tells us that in the last days, "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold." (Matthew 24:12)
Women leaders within the Intifada are also exploiting this new development. Along with calling more of their sisters to act in kind they are beginning to voice their opinion that Arafat is a has been and are calling for new leadership, truly a mixed blessing for Israel! Some of these women are of an extremely radical bent and are calling for Israel's complete annihilation and are expressing their opposition to the 1993 Oslo agreements that call for a land for peace exchange.The Palestinians clearly want it all, their intentions are clear, not only is a Palestinian state desired, but a state that occupies all of present day Israel and void of Jews, something Yassar Arafat has stood for all along. Here we have the foundation for Israel's false peace agreement, what the Bible calls a covenant with death (Isaiah 28:14-15), and the motivation for her enemies to invade her the moment she is unsuspecting.
