Solidarity Out, Poland
Again Ruled By Communists
By Randy Loudenslager
Russian hegemony is creeping back into familiar places. Under economic hardships the Polish people ended the domination of their government by Solidarity after 12 years in power. Solidarity began the domino effect of falling communist regimes in Eastern Europe, but has found itself bested in the voting booths of Poland by the Communists.
Russia, as the old Soviet Union, enjoyed considerable sway over Poland in the past. Russia's president Vladimir Putin has visited Poland under the pretense of welding economic ties between the two countries. With money pouring in from oil and weapons sales, Russia is beginning to enjoy her growing economic clout once again. One example is the pouring of humanitarian and military aid into Afghanistan in support of the new government there.
As Russia reaches out to old cold war allies she will also find an eager to please European Union. Desperate to establish her own identity apart from the U.S., the EU is embracing Russia's call for greater cooperation in the economic and security circles. In a quiet way Russia may have more nations in her orbit than the United States. As she consolidates her relationships and increases her sway over once sovereign governments, Russia will begin to exercise her power world wide. This will not necessarily mean a path leading to war with the U.S., rather, Russia is working patiently at eroding the world's faith in American goodwill and weaning the nations from dependence on America by buying them with cheap oil and cheap weapons while wearing a friendly facade. It's working, if Poland is any indication.
America no longer has a policy of containment in regards to Russia since she shifted her focus and war doctrine away from a two war military doctrine to a one war military and focused on China as the enemy. With few governments watching Russia closely and operating without accountability she stands to gain considerable influence on U.S. allies and the world's economy. Even with a rusting military and the hangover from a nightmarish bout with economic depression Russia is still a superpower. Expect her to exert substantial influence on the world of the near future. It may be a world that is dwelt in by the antichrist and a much leaner and meaner Russia will be at his disposal. Ezekiel chapter 38 features Russia as the core of a force made up of many nations. The demonic chief prince of Russia, Gog, will lead the hordes of Russia against Israel without understanding that it is the LORD that has assembled them in order to pour out his wrath upon them and show his glory to those who are found blameless.
