Not If, But When
Today I was reading a newsletter article written by a Christian. The article was about how God had awakened America on 9-11. The writer went on about how God was going to use America to reach the Muslims before the end comes. He went on further to give a quick historical overview of how God used America during World War II to liberate oppressed nations and there was a great harvest. He continued the overview by following WWII with the Cold War. The writer wrote of the conclusion of the Cold War by describing how the Christian nation of America triumphed over the Communist Soviet Union which started to a great harvest in present day Russia. He told of how many prophecy writers were convinced back then that the Soviet Union would attack Israel but nothing happened. He gave the well known fact that there are more saved people now than in all of history combined. And now it is Islam's turn to be saved by Jesus using America to bring about his will.
Folks, with the vast amount of Christian writing available I normally wouldn't think of it as a prudent use of my time or this newsletter to argue with everything I read. With that said, I do think that I need to address this person's view point. I think his view point is a very popular one in America but misses the big picture of God's will as seen in the Bible.
The big picture is that this world is not going to get better. Creation is groaning under the curse of sin and mankind is inclined from his childhood toward evil. There will be no spiritual renaissance in the world. Communism has not been defeated. Russia and her allies under the antichrist will attack Israel. There are more people saved than ever before because there are more people alive now than in all human history combined! Look at the world through the eyes of prophets, teachers, exhorters and encouragers. Encourage each other with the promise of the resurrection to come and the everlasting life to follow! Not with fuzzy math and amateur interpretations of history! We need to disassociate from the touchy-feely positive 'everything is going to be all right in this world' doctrine! For those who stand firm to the end in Christ everything WILL be great, but this world is spiraling towards the last day when the kings of the earth will stand in final rebellion against the LORD and be annihilated by the sword of his mouth. In order to get from here to there it is going to have to go from bad to worse - just like all of history. History clearly shows a downhill slide since the flood. This slide is broken only intermittently by respites of righteousness.
Yes, there are obviously things God is doing through America at this time, but God doesn't need America and at an appointed time America will be pushed to the side or step voluntarily away from Israel as her protector. God's word tells of the curses that come upon nations that disobey him. Last days prophecy clearly shows that although great tribulation will come upon the earth the people will curse God's name and will not repent and many of those that do repent will not be sincere. Is our Christianity so shallow as to think that if we simply speak cheery prophetic utterances or encouraging words with the LORD's name attached that we will postpone what scripture says will come until future generations? I do not stand with those who say we can delay those days of darkness. Those days will come at an appointed time - my Bible says so!
It is not the job of Christians to prevent the tribulation or the coming of Christ. Our job is to lay hold of the kingdom of God as it advances forcefully! "From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it." Matthew 11:12.
Yes, God has answered the prayers of this nation in the past, but in the past we were a Christian nation, now Muslims worship in the White House! When America is crushed, not just by enemies from without, but by the burdens of her wickedness within, then no one will be left to hold back the man of lawlessness from plundering Israel!
Let us no longer put America ahead of the body of Christ. It is not through America that the world sees Jesus Christ, but through his church. As the church's persecution increases we will see the fruit come from seeds planted in good soil and many of Ishmael's sons and daughters will become one with Jesus Christ!
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4.
